It was a
small town in south central Pennsylvania where the artist, Norbert Scanlan,
was born and reared. Ebensburg was a clean community surrounded by coal
portals, now abandoned, and tranquil farms. As the county seat the town
had a collection of law offices with the Cambria County courthouse as
a central focus. Judges and lawyers established their homes here which
provided a flavor of architectural creativity beyond the average simplicity
of common dwellings.
In this
environment Norbert grew up and gradually developed an appreciation
for landscapes, unique farm sheds, and ways of life of local people.
Additionally, he found a childhood fascination with the natural forms
and inherent beauty found in pristine rural settings. Needless to say
effects of the splendor and magnificence of a rising or setting sun
continuously provoked emotional desires to interpret and render in artistic
terms this heavenly display.
Seasonal
differences as well as climatic conditions and nocturnal subjects endlessly
served as sources of inspiration for Norbert. The material included
in this site is a sample of the creative endeavors and studies resulting
from environmental stimuli of Norbert Scanlan.
